Volunteers Needed - 1:1 Reading Grades K-5

Hello SIS Community:

We are looking for volunteers to reboot our 1:1 reading program in the school.  The K-5 teachers have noted specific days and times here that work for their specific classroom needs/schedules.  Volunteers will come in on their designated day/time and will be set up where space can be found.  The student(s) can read to them and/or they can read to the student(s) as instructed by the student teacher.  Our hopes are that we can keep the volunteers as consistent as possible and not change on the individual student from week to week. We'd like the commitment to be ongoing until the end of the year.  Please note on the sign up sheet if you are able to keep this commitment ongoing or if it is something you are only available for from time to time.  We do realize that things come up and you may not always be able to fulfill your commitment. If this happens, please reach out to the teacher you are volunteering for and we will help them get the spot filled. 

Please remember, all volunteers will need to have a cleared and up to date background check on file with the school.  If you are unsure if yours is up to date, please reach out and we can check this for you. Background checks need to be updated every two years.  If you have not filled these forms out before, we can send them to you for completion. Once returned, these can take a few weeks to process.  Please plan for this processing time if you are wanting to sign up for any volunteer opportunity right away.

SIS Volunteer Coordinators

One of the two Volunteer Coordinator roles will be opening up after this school year.  Kim will be moving on with her graduating 8th grader.  Kelli plans to remain and we are looking for someone to fill the vacant position.  This role supports SIS staff, PTC and the Board to help manage volunteer needs of Sauvie Island School throughout the year.  It works well to have two folks split the role and there is room to coordinate based on interest and availability of both coordinators.  Ideally, we would have a new coordinator shadow a bit by the end of this school year with both Kim and Kelli.  If you are interested in finding out more, please reach out to us at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org.  We are happy to meet and talk with anyone interested in more detail about the role, workflow and time commitment as well as answer any additional questions you may have.  

This volunteer role is very dynamic and offers a wonderful opportunity to join with parents, staff, students and the surrounding community throughout the school year.
