In the Classroom

Curriculum Updates with Ms. Dawn

Our classrooms are welcoming spring by taking their regular and place-based schoolwork outside.  Some recent explorations across the grades have included harvesting microgreens, study of rocks and minerals, adaptive sports, a pop-up plant sale, writing narrative essays outside, creating solar art. Classrooms have been busy with field trips for geology, marine biology, theatre and farming.  Make sure to download our new Sauvie Island School app to see the daily news feed offering a glimpse into the magic happening each day.

Art Updates with Ms. Mashell

Our art classes have been creating painted paste paper. They used many items to create their own designs such as combs, brushes, Lego pieces, bubble wrap and more.  Once created and dried they used those papers to make a collage such as a park scene, ocean theme or even a bird in a cage. So many different ones.

A couple of other projects involved resist artwork using a variety of oil pastel colors. Once they drew their designs they used a blue wash and the oil pastels resisted the wash showing the design. The other project was using the white oil pastel to draw their picture, paint paper with water and then place colored tissue paper squares where they chose. More the merrier. The tissue paper color would run onto the design. Once dry, off came the tissue paper squares revealing the masterpiece created.

Library Updates with Ms. Alisha

The library has been busy this winter/spring celebrating Black History Month in February, Women's History Month in March and Poetry Month in April. Students tried their hands at various forms of poetry (blackout poems, shape poems, chain poems and even a mini poetry slam). We learned about a variety of leaders and innovators such as Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr and the children in Oklahoma in 1958 who staged a sit-in at Katz's lunch counter. While discussing Women's History Month, we talked about prominent figures such as Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Amelia Earhart in addition to lesser known women such as Ada Lovelace (mathematician and pioneer of the modern computer) and Clara Lemlich (organizer of the largest strike of female workers in history).

Lots of new books have been coming in this spring as a result of our successful book fair, parent donations and the recommendations of our students. Graphic novels remain very popular and have been a gateway into chapter book reading for the mid to older grades. Many classic titles have begun to be released as graphic novels and the students have been enjoying the artwork and modern representation. Over this semester, students have been writing "Recommended Reading" reviews of favorite books found in the library that have been made into a bulletin board of suggested titles for summer reading. Drop by and check it out!

The buy-one-get-one Book Fair will be held June 5th-9th in the library. It's a great way to get a start on summer reading! We will be closing out the library the second week of June and asking students to return all books they may have at home in order to complete our yearly inventory. Please take a look around your child's room and return any overdue books by June 12th. Thank you!

Volunteer Corner

The school auction is coming up this weekend and we are so excited!  While we already have quite a few helping hands for setting up, we are still looking for volunteers to help on Sunday, May 21st at 10:00 am at Columbia Farms to break down, clean up and bring all items back to the school.  Please reach out if you are able to help with this or simply show up to lend a hand.  Kids are welcome to come with you on Sunday.  We are also looking for a few more volunteers to help with various tasks during the live auction.  Please sign up here if you are interested in helping with these needs.

The Spring Book Fair is coming up from June 5th-9th.  Volunteers are still needed for this event.  Sign up slots start for Friday the 2nd after school (set up) through the 9th to help in various roles.  Please sign up here  if you are able to help during any of the needed times throughout Book Fair week.

If you have any questions, concerns or ideas regarding the above volunteer needs or about volunteering at SIS, please always feel free to reach out to Kim and Kelli at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org

Thank you,

Grange Hall Rentals

The Sauvie Island Grange is available to all as a rental space for private parties, meetings and gatherings. You can rent the building by the hour or half-day. The hall space can be rented separately from the kitchen or together based on need. Grange members thoroughly sanitize the hall and kitchen before scheduled use. Please visit this link for more specifics on rentals or contact Katherine Topaz at 503-708-0008.

Odds and Ends

Please report any changes in your student's dismissal at least 1 hour before the end of the school day by contacting Ann at 503-621-3426. The end of the day is quite busy and it's often difficult to notify teachers of last-minute changes. Thank you for your cooperation!

We are officially at the one month mark for the last day of school! This means The Pile's days are numbered. Please have your student drop in and look for their lost goods before items are donated at the end of the year.
